The Third Annual Dancing with Our Stars for the American Red Cross held on Saturday, March 21 at the Friend’s Community Center featured extraordinary fundraising as well as impressive dancing. Although all the numbers are not in, together with the amazing efforts of our star and professional dancers, sponsors, and with the support of the community, we are safe to say that more than $170,000 in net revenue was raised to support Red Cross programs and services in our community.
Our dancers definitely put their best foot forward to entertain and amaze the crowd of over 500 guests. The evening began with a social hour followed by dinner before the all-star dance program where the dancers definitely put their best foot forward to entertain. Following special performances by semi-pro dancers Dianne Coriell and her partner Dennis Roell, a spicy Charleston by the troupe from Cirque d’Art and fun with the crowd, the evening concluded with the awards ceremony.
Taking away the top honor for the Mirror Ball Fundraising Trophy was local Realtor Neal Hatcher who raised a record breaking $105,416.00 to support the local Red Cross. First runner up went to Rita Prose, a clinical social worker at Hill View Retirement Center with $14,061 while the second place runner up was awarded to Taylor Newman, RN at King’s Daughters Medical Center Ohio with $12,332. The People’s Choice award went to Taylor Newman and his partner Autumn Thompson for their Mambo to “Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing while the Judges’ Choice award went to Jonica Burke, Director of Budget and Financial Analysis at Shawnee State University and her partner Ladd Dunham for their Paso Doble to “Cancion del Mariachi”. A big thank you to all our star dancers for their time, commitment, energy and passion: Sharma Brown, Owner/hair designer, Headquarters Salon; Brent Eaton, Dean of Students Wheelersburg Middle School; Attorney John Gambill; Portia Spradlin, All State Owner/Agent; Dr. T. J. Stidham, SOMC Pediatrics Associates and Sarah Surina, Director Main Streets Portsmouth.
Thank you to our sponsors including: The Glockner Family of Dealerships, Southern Ohio Medical Center, WesBanco, Neal Hatcher Real Estate, Dever and Company, SOMC Pediatric Associates, Holiday Inn Portsmouth, YEI Corporation, American Savings Bank, Berndt Murfin Insurance; Johnson, Oliver and Howard, LPA; Fluor B & W Portsmouth, SunCoke, The Party Connection, Amy Heim, DDS; Port City Café & the Garage Café; and OSCO Industries along with our numerous table sponsors and patrons. We also thank our media partners The Portsmouth Daily Times and WNXT 99.3 for their promotional support.
OU Southern Electronic Media Club did another outstanding job as our technical team and Bravo Live DJ provided stupendous lighting, sound and music for this year’s event. The Star’s video introductions produced by Andrew Dodson Photography and Brandon Shamhart Top Shelf Videography were very entertaining. With Beau Vastine at the helm as host, Wendi Waugh covering the Green Room and Mary Arnzen interviewing guests in the audience, the evening was filled with surprises, but the biggest surprises came from our “Official Judges” Jeremy Burnside, James Dalton and Amy Hassel who were never at a loss for words and whose antics had the crowd in stitches! And last but not least, a big thank you goes to Terry Horner-Phipps our official photographer and to our committee, volunteers and most of all the community for supporting their local American Red Cross.
More photos will be available soon on Facebook. DVD’s may be ordered by contacting the local Red Cross office at 354-3293. Anyone interested in participating in Dancing With Our Stars 2016 scheduled for March 19th should also contact the local Red Cross office.
